I CAN report that the last month has consisted of a demanding programme of training, devotional duties and refitting after our recent disembarkation. The revered Interrogator-Chaplain has been busy exorcising the spirit remnants left by the forces of chaos from our new base camp — often performing these duties for 50 hours at a time without rest!
We have been ordered to initiate a pattern of patrol sweeps, covering a radius of approximately 30 leagues from our base. This has required the squad I am with [Tac 1] and a section of Scouts from 10th Company spending many hours trudging through this desolate wasteland, both day and night, in a state of constant readiness for action. However no enemy contacts have been made — but Tac 3 [recent reinforcements], on one of their patrols sighted distant figures who have as yet not been identified.
The Techmarine and his Servitors have managed to get the listening station operational, but as yet with only a limited 130-degree scanning arc. They have had to carry out extensive repairs on the existing obsolete equipment, achieving a miracle in getting it to work at all! The machine spirit obviously weakened after so many centuries of inactivity.
There is an interesting rumour spreading around, the subject of which is a Relic of much antiquity and power, hidden in a cave system somewhere within the equatorial belt of this planet. How the rumour started I don't know — and we can do nothing to search for this item with our present force composition, we simply can't send out long-range recce squads with any force at present.
Further elements from the 4th company our en-route to us but until we are up to full strength, we are digging in.
