Redesign: on the road

29 January 2020 | 8th Edition

I've made the decision that this site is in need of a redesign.

The last time it was fundamentally refreshed was when it became responsive back in 2015. Prior to that, it was a total look-and-feel revamp in 2010. Usually this sort of work would be done behind the scenes and out of the public gaze. But as an excercise in a live update — it might be fun to do this in the open. This will mean that occasionally things will look very different here, and things might break or indeed not work. But that's all part of it.

To follow progress and thinking, the plan is that anything related to the redesign will have a title starting with "Redesign:". And this page will serve as an ongoing table of contents. So here we go:

  1. Redesign: Ditching Disqus
Why Disqus commenting just has to go.
  2. Redesign: Gone secure. Gone HTTPS
    The importance of going secure.
  3. Redesign: Lessons learned from migrating to a secure server
Why switching server is not so simple.
  4. Redesign: Setting design change goals
Getting some structure to the outcome is important.
  5. Redesign: From green to white
Switching over from old to new and all that entails.
  6. Redesign: Details, details
Let's start obsessing with things no-one will really care about.
  7. Redesign: RSS and FeedBurner
    The trouble with FeedBurner.
